Interview with Tobias Knobl, CEO at Feingeist Software

Emails certainly hold a great importance in modern business communication and it is an undeniable fact that they have become an indispensable part of almost every person’s work routine. Millions of personal/professional emails are exchanged every day. So it becomes absolutely essential to make the most out of your mailbox to enhance productivity and save time. But like most of the Apple’s stock Mac apps, Mail also comes with limited and basic functionality. This creates a gap which needs to be filled and MailButler does just that.

MailButler is a plugin for Apple mail that adds six tools to Mail that are really useful if you have to send a lot of emails. MailButler helps in saving time and also lets you avoid common email mistakes. The plugin is created by Berlin-based Feingeist Software and is available free of charge. Some of the useful features of this plugin are – Scheduling Email, Undo Send, Cloud Storage Integration, Attachment Reminder, Signatures, etc.

Here is a small interview with Tobias Knobl, the founder of the company Feingeist Software.

What motivated you to start the company and what is it all about?

Feingeist develops useful software for Mac OS X. Our company was founded with the vision to make the life of Mac users easier, and help them complete their daily tasks in the most convenient and elegant way. Our developers perceive security, privacy and productivity as some of the most important modern issues, and their products particularly target these issues. Our software includes an Apple Mail assistant MailButler, and a VPN client Shimo. They have just one target: to simplify life and optimize one’s daily productivity.

Can you tell us a bit about your partners who are part of your core team?

Our core team consists of two co-founders: Dr. Fabian Jäger, who is the company’s main software engineer and product developer, and me. My name is Tobias Knobl, and I am the CEO. Besides, the company has its own Graphic Designer, a Marketing and Public Relations Manager, as well as a Customer Service Specialist.

What is the current team Size? How did you hire your initial team??

The current team consists of five people. Our team is a combination of specialists who were recruited through employment websites and referrals.

Which recruiting channels work best for you? Referrals/Job Boards/ Staffing Agencies?

Until now there has been no tendency for some of the recruiting channels to be more successful for us than the others. We carefully consider every channel and every recruitment opportunity in order to not miss a good professional because of our personal preferences.

What are the key factors that you look for in a potential candidate?

The qualities we look for in a potential candidate are position-specific. However, there are general things as well that we seek for, such as competence, the desire and potential to learn, to move forward, and to set new goals for himself and for the company. What we also appreciate is ambition, initiative, and commitment.

According to you how much is the competition in your vertical? How big is the industry? Who all are your competitors and what are your views on them?

There are many companies, which, as us, develop software for MacBooks. Of course, there are different spheres to specialize in, but generally, the branch we’re working in is represented by a solid number of big and small players. We take that with a positive frame of mind, and most of all, healthy perception of one’s own competitors leads to successful business, company’s progress, and new achievements in the field. So we try to stay aware of our competitors’ activity on the market, and learn from it, too.

What are your marketing strategies? Do you take help of Social platforms to promote ? Which channels have been very effective? Which marketing channels have been super flops?

In the tech world “spreading the word” works especially good: users rely on their favourite news providers, bloggers, magazines, and websites. Hence, we paid special attention to affiliate marketing and got ourselves covered in a lot of tech editions and by people who regularly report about new software. It has proven effective, and we are planning on working with this marketing channel in the future as well. Also, we actively use social media channels, particularly, Facebook and Twitter. We estimate their effectiveness as high. Our followers’ number is growing very fast and so does the number of interactions with our existing and potential customers through social platforms.

What has been your experience with paid marketing channels?

We’re still discovering the field of paid marketing channels, and trying new things in it. Until today our experience has been mainly positive.

Can you elaborate on the Challenges in promoting your website/ App?

We face the same challenges as many of our colleagues in the field: balancing between keeping the standards high, the costs low, and surprising our customers with great new products while staying the same company, which we used to be when we produced our first software. Earning trust on the market is not an easy thing to do, and it should be sustained every single day.

What is the current traction? Can you share some numbers on Usage and Revenue?

We are self-sustaining, have both loyal customers, who follow our updates and news, and acquire a lot of new fans around the globe each day. This all contributes to a positive trend in the company’s development.

Based on your experience would you have any advice to new Entrepreneur / Startups?

Set targets, always keep them in mind, and don’t get distracted. Staying up-to-date and well informed are one of the most important things for new entrepreneurs, especially in a rapidly changing tech world. Reading literature on your topic, talking to people, exchanging experience are the things that bring you forward.
